Hockey East released its weekly awards and Boston College earned its first team of the week honors, with star forward Johnny Gaudreau taking home player of the week.
Boston College won Hockey East's Team of the Week Award and forward Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary Flames) took home Athletic Republic Player of the Week honors for Hockey East's third week. Gaudreau, who recorded 11 shots on the weekend, notched a goal and an assist in victories over UMass and Northeastern for a four-point weekend, including the OT game-winner against UMass. Gaudreau (2-3=5) is second in individual league scoring to teammate Pat Mullane (2-4=6).
BC outlasted the Minutemen by a 5-4 score, and thumped Northeastern, 3-0, on the same night that the Eagles unveiled their 2012 NCAA Championship banner at Conte Forum. The four-point weekend put BC into a tie for first place in Hockey East with the Huskies, who beat Merrimack and BC in their first two home games last week at Matthews Arena, but struggled mightily in their first road test on Chestnut Hill.
Jon Gillies (Calgary) spent more time on the ice than anyone in the conference over the weekend, and was rewarded for his efforts with the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week award. Gillies, whose 128:02 TOI over two games at fourth-ranked Miami (OH) backstopped the Friars to two strong efforts, losing 4-3 on Friday night and skating to a 1-1 tie on Saturday. He stopped 53 shots on the weekend.
Casey DeSmith had Doug Carr had strong outings in net for UNH and Lowell, respectively, on the weekend, and were recognized for their efforts by being named co-defensive players of the week. Carr only let one goal past him in games against fifth-ranked Denver and 19th-ranked Colorado College over the weekend, coming in in relief on Friday and getting the win on Saturday. DeSmith let a soft goal in to start off UNH's 4-1 victory against BU on Saturday, but shut the door afterwards, stopping the remaining 24 shots that he saw
