Riley Wetmore scored a power play goal just 3:08 into the period. The senior from Swanton, Vermont chipped a puck above Providence goalie Jon Gillies' shoulder. Scott Wilson and Derek Arnold were credited with the assists.
Providence looked lethargic for much of the period, unable to generate much sustained pressure. The Friar power play went 0 for 4 in the period while the River Hawks scored on one of their two power play opportunities.
Gillies made nine saves for the Friars while River Hawks' freshman goalie Connor Hellebuyck also made nine saves.
