Top Minnesota High School Players By Class--March Edition

I posted my first edition of this list back in December, and it was fairly popular. This is the peak week of high school hockey interest in the state of Minnesota, and it brings a lot of traffic here(It helps when you're Out-Googling the Star-Trib. Maybe they're the ones that don't deserve a credential to cover the tournament.) So I figured I would post my player rankings once again after a season's worth of adding and adjusting all the names on it.

Standard disclaimer that I'm just including players I've seen play personally, so there's probably a couple out-state kids that I've missed. The list is posted after the jump.

With the disclaimer that I understand that it is tough to put together a list like this without missing something or putting guys in arguable spots (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) but a few things come to mind when reading this.

Knochenmus is a nice player and certainly deserves to be on the list of top 50 seniors. But he is nowhere near the top five seniors in Minnesota. Most of the guys in the next ten to 15 spots below him are better players.

A few of your defensive choices gives the impression you don’t spend a lot of time focusing on blue liners unless they have the puck on their stick in the offensive zone.

You made a glaring oversight by not having Mario Lucia among the top 30 sophomores. He played a vital role on a top AA team and wasn’t far from leading his team in points.

1. Knochenmus. You’re right that everyone is going to have their favorites, and I know I rate Knochenmus higher than most. There’s definitely a lot of guys on the list that might have more productive college/pro careers, but among high school players, I’m comfortable with where I’ve got him. I can’t think of too many guys better than him in the Elite League this year. There’s also the issue that the more you see guys, the pickier you get. I saw a lot more of Herbert’s games this year, and that probably played a factor in why I dropped him below Knochenmus.

2. Which defensive defensemen do you think I’m missing? In general, I think the high school level is thin enough that if a player is really that good, odds are he’s chipping in quite a few points.

3. Lucia is probably an oversight. I didn’t see much of Wayzata this year. The lists are definitely less complete as you move down through the ages.

Goalies

I know this is just your list, but leaving Alex Fons off the list is a pretty large oversight. He was second team all metro (take that for what its worth) and played on an extremely average Hopkins team. I’m surprised you have Meyers (good goalie) as high as you do without any mention of Fons. Fons had better numbers playing behind a team not nearly as good as BSM.
