The United States Has Won The World Junior Tournament

Wow.  What an absolute classic of a game. I don't think I've ever seen a game played at a pace like that. Every American kid absolutely laid it on the line tonight; blocking shots, making hits, doing whatever it takes.  All those kids get a free pass for life from me(except Danny Kristo, whose free pass lasts until about late Friday afternoon). This is pretty sweet.

Also, allow me to say, with absolutely as much condescension as I can muster that maybe Canada's team wouldn't have underperformed like they did if they had taken more NCAA players.

I’m just so pleased, so wonderfully pleased about this whole thing. WE BLEW ANOTHER FREAKING LEAD AND WE STILL WON, I’M SO DAMN HAPPY!

by Jon Marthaler on Jan 5, 2010 8:13 PM PST reply actions

Yeah I am happy as hell…can you imagine if hockey was the number one sport in USA what we would do to these Canadians…hahah I love the fact that we kicked there ass on there soil. Pretty good being we are the fourth or fifth most popular sport in America.

by ironflexgym on Jan 5, 2010 8:51 PM PST reply actions

All I gotta say is “WOOOHOOO!!”

I was getting sick of Canadians talking so much !@#$.

And their beer STILL sucks.

by ness180 on Jan 5, 2010 11:22 PM PST reply actions

Great win by USA.

No way is hockey the “fourth or fifth most popular sport in America.” I’d be surprised if it were in the Top 20. Either by number of spectators, number of participants or TV ratings.

Heck it might not even be in the Top 100 in participants.

Also, allow me to say, with absolutely as much condescension as I can muster that maybe Canada’s team wouldn’t have underperformed like they did if they had taken more NCAA players.

U.S. won because they finally figured out that you have to have a core group of CHL players on your team……10 players on the U.S. roster with CHL connections…the most ever and it equalled gold!

by KTF on Jan 6, 2010 3:06 AM PST reply actions

Damn. Why didn't I think of that?

I mean, I must have been caught up watching Jerry D’Amigo (RPI), Derek Stepan (Wisconsin), Jordan Schroeder (Minnesota), Danny Kristo (North Dakota), John Ramage (Wisconsin), Mike Lee (St. Cloud State), and Jack Campbell (NTDP) all play key roles on this team.

But, yeah, it’s all Canadian major junior hockey’s doing. Where would we be in this world were it not for Canada?

by bciskie on Jan 6, 2010 7:14 AM PST reply actions

Nice win for US!!

However, let’s not open the door for this NCAA blind fanaticism to run rampant here! You would have to be absolutely delusional to claim that this game was NCAA vs. the CHL rather than simply looking at it being the US vs. Canada. If you want to make that claim, and you really want me to bring you to reality, I will! The REAL winner is the CHL. You had two teams in the final that consisted of 75%+ CHL players! Also, the word is still out on some kids as to whether they will go to the NCAA or CHL (i.e. – Zucker). A scant 25% were from the NCAA. Gee, sounds eerily similar to the NHL draft! :) This representation of CHL players on the US roster was the most in history.

HEY CISKIE, NOTICE THE TREND YET! :)

by wickedsmart on Jan 6, 2010 8:07 AM PST up reply actions

John Carlson was the stud of the night, and he was left off Team USA last year because he went to the OHL. We can say that Canada should have taken more NCAA players, but it goes both ways; USA was rewarded for being more willing to take CHL players this year as well.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 6, 2010 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

one night? Nice logic

by fetch9 on Jan 6, 2010 11:32 AM PST up reply actions

He’s also the leading defensive scorer in the AHL and already got 3 games with the Caps. He’s one of the Caps top prospects, and he lit up the OHL last year. He definitely could have played for Team USA last year but wasn’t invited. If you weren’t impressed watching him play this tournament then I’m not sure what you were watching.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 7, 2010 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

I thought Carlson had a good tourney and he was definately one of the better defenseman on team USA.

by Eric B on Jan 7, 2010 11:12 PM PST up reply actions

Did I say I wasn't impressed?

I know who John Carlson is, trust me.

I know you like to be argumentative just to be argumentative, but maybe you should chillax with that a bit.

by fetch9 on Jan 8, 2010 7:47 AM PST up reply actions

I don’t get argumentative just to be argumentative, but whatever, that’s not the point. Your response “one night? Nice logic” implied that my point was flawed because I was only looking at one game. While I singled out the Gold medal game, that wasn’t the only game JC was awesome in so I felt the need to point that out. If you know who John Carlson is, and his history, then why would you have made the comment that I replied to?

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 8, 2010 4:01 PM PST up reply actions

I say feel free to look at who the point getters are..

and you come back with a strawman. You’re not worth arguing with because you possess no logic.

Beadlemaniacs - Award winning* college basketball blog

by fetch9 on Jan 10, 2010 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

Strawman

I do not think this word means what you think it means. The “point getters” was meant to direct to reader to the important pieces of Team USA. Some of them were NCAA products, some were CHL products. You want to look at the NCAA but you’re ignoring the CHL contributions. Whatever.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 10, 2010 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

It wasn’t just anti-CHL. We weren’t taking enough non-NTDP kids, regardless of where they played.

IMHO that hurt more than just an anti-CHL bias, because there are a ton of good players in the U.S. who aren’t going the NTDP route.

by bciskie on Jan 8, 2010 7:02 AM PST up reply actions

Good point, it’s good to see Team USA take a more open-minded approach in all respects.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 8, 2010 4:02 PM PST up reply actions

The "core" of this team consisted of NCAA guys

Team USA scoring
NCAA- 28 goals, 69 points
CHL-13 goals, 36 points

Yeah, the CHL was definitely the core…..

by The Rabid One on Jan 6, 2010 8:43 AM PST reply actions

How do you fit John Carlson into that?

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jan 6, 2010 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Put Carlson into the CHL even though he just straight signed.

by The Rabid One on Jan 6, 2010 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

Oops, he did play for London, so he belongs with the CHL guys.

by The Rabid One on Jan 6, 2010 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Rabid – It doesn’t matter where the core came from. It’s the CHL’s world, and we’re just borrowing their oxygen for a few years.

Blah Blah Blah

don’t you guys ever get tired of spewing your inane comments back and forth ??

fact: hockey is Canada’s game; and timber (and strip clubs) is Canada’s industry;

fact: football is america’s game; basketball is america’s game; baseball is america’s game

fact: major junior (u20) is still pre-eminent pipeline to nhl

fact: ncaa hockey route (u24/25/26) is sending way more kids to nhl than in the past (even if you try to skew the numbers by excluding ushl, prep school and other programs because that’s where they were playing WHEN they were drafted); and that that number is increasing every year;

fact: each route has advantages and disadvantages, and within each route, alot depends on the player/team/coach; both prepare you for the nhl, and both are great hockey.

fact: one game (or series of games) doesn’t prove or disprove which route is better.

fact: nhl GM’s don’t care which route a kid takes as long as he’s playing regularly

fact: some of you need to get a life !!

David Branch

Great game! Compliments to both teams & players. However, here’s what disgusts me: David Branch going on TSN and talking about their “scholarship” program…read this article and tell me how this guy can sleep at night? If the link doesn’t work – cut and paste it.

Argue all you want about Major Junior vs. NCAA route…I just think you have to set yourself up for life AFTER hockey.

by Chip 'er Deep on Jan 6, 2010 9:51 AM PST reply actions

A few points...

1. Kids can choose to take a full course load while in the CHL, but most choose to focus on hockey. That is what the league is about anyhow, right?
2. All you have to do is play ONE regular season game and you get a education package for one year. Not bad!
3. It is not the CHL’s fault if an education package is offered, and a kid chooses to play pro longer than 18 mos.. That is the result of poor advising. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,“Take your education packages if you do not sign an NHL contract!”
4. Unice played more games in one OHL season than he would have at BG, and he is also USING his education package…which this reporter failed to comment on.
5. A lot of people comment on how these education packages are costing the CHL money. Very naive. The CHL does very well financially to say the least. Ticket sales, TV contracts, marketing and products of top players, and finally NHL development money for draft picks. Money in the CHL is noooo problem!
6. Does the CHL want kids to choose pro hockey over the education packages? Absolutely. Why wouldn’t they? Does the CHL try to find ways to avoid giving education packages? Absolutely NOT!

Its the TEAM that counts

As a college hockey fan, i gave cheers to all the NCAA players.
As a WCHA fan, I cheered for the 7 WCHA players.
As a DU fan, I gave special cheers for Donovan and Zucker.

But, the biggest cheers go to TEAM USA!
They played as a Team and they won as a Team.

Hey, the elitist snobs from north of the border are the ones trying to beat everyone over the head with this idea that major juniors got the US their gold medal.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with defending NCAA hockey from such ignorance.

by bciskie on Jan 6, 2010 11:21 AM PST reply actions

I don’t understand why it always has to be a CHL versus the NCAA. Both programs produce great hockey players, seems to be a constant pissing contest about the CHL versus the NCAA.

by Eric B on Jan 6, 2010 9:31 PM PST up reply actions

If you look at the article, and the chronological order of the posts, you will see that there was clearly some NCAA chest thumping that provoked the thread. It was the US vs. Canada, not the NCAA vs. CHL, and it was a very nice win for the US. If the US consisted of 100% NCAA players, then and only then could you say that this was the NCAA vs CHL. For those of you who discredit the CHL players on the US team because the CHL players did not contribute equally in the scoring column, shame on you. There is a lot more to the game than that. Fowler, Carlson, Campbell, Jenks… provided the intangible contributions necessary for the the success of the US TEAM.

by wickedsmart on Jan 6, 2010 11:48 AM PST reply actions

Nice try. If the scoring had been reversed, you’d be all over it saying the US could only win with CHL guys because the NCAA guys couldn’t get it done. Then if an NCAA fan had made the same comment you just did, you’d have blasted them for it. So again, nice try.

by The Rabid One on Jan 6, 2010 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

I personally do not care where these guys came from, the guy that scored the winning goal plays in the AHL.

by Eric B on Jan 9, 2010 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

Here you go Cujo!

No, I would not. However, since you brought it up…

US vs. Canada in the finals.
Two teams = 44 players
75% CHL
25% NCAA

by wickedsmart on Jan 7, 2010 4:44 AM PST reply actions

And the team with all the NCAA guys is the one wearing Gold. Funny, the one year Canada has no NCAA guys on it, they lose.

by The Rabid One on Jan 8, 2010 1:39 AM PST up reply actions

Funny, the one year the U.S. finally has a strong contigent of CHL players they win…..too bad they didn’t figure that out before. I am sure that now that they have, that the record 10 CHL players on this year’s team will be broken!

by KTF on Jan 8, 2010 3:09 AM PST reply actions

Every team needs role players and the CHL guys seem to fit that nicely. ;)

Get it over with.

The NCAA should just declare the MJ players eligible again and get on with the recruiting wars!

Sagard I am all for it and let the games begin.
