Hickey Leaves Wisconsin

Andy Baggot of the Wisconsin State Journal reported yesterday that Wisconsin forward Chris Hickey will be transferring to another school, after it became apparent that he wouldn't be playing much for the Badgers.

It's no surprise that he didn't play much at Wisconsin last year, since UW's coaches wanted to keep him in juniors another year, but Hickey convinced them to take him last year. It's another story of a kid that really wanted to play for Wisconsin, and was told that he could, but when the time came, there wasn't any room for him. It's also another red flag for any kid considering committing to Wisconsin. This type of thing has happened frequently enough over the past couple of years that it should make any player think twice before agreeing to play for the Badgers.

So you think it is a better

situation to play for a team where there is a revolving door for Assistant Coaches?

by Lowbid on Jul 7, 2009 12:34 PM PDT reply actions

…and to play for head coaches like Pete Deboer and Mike Babcock? You betcha!

chl/ncaa

touche wkd… smart: but point you make is not really analogous. Badger’s have a long and well documented history of over-recruiting and asking players to defer their enrollment. No other D1 school is disadvantaged (cheated) by their practices. Whereas, when a chl prospect tells league he is going ncaa route, it is done so that a first or second round pick falls to where cheating franchise obtains first round quality prospect with a late round pick. Yes, in the badger situation, kids do get screwed, but if those families did their homework (and checked birthdates on roster), they’d see that badger practice is well documented. Compare average age of badger roster with michigan roster and you’ll see that numbers don’t lie (Berenson tells parents up front the experience they need to play as a true freshman) In any system, fair or unfair, there will always be those that stretch, cross, ethical limits. However, chl system is flawed from the get go by penalizing chl teams that take a kid at his word when he says he’s honoring his ncaa verbal commitment. The ncaa way is freedom of choice, but if parents don’t do their homework, there will always be coaches that get away with deception.

Options are limited in NCAA

Are you kidding me…“the NCAA is freedom of choice” Sure sign a letter of intent and then find out after one year the coach does not think you have the skill set to play at the school you signed with. If you are over 20 you have no where to play while you sit out the required year. Or after a year at said school you discover “Mr Friendly” who recruited you is really a total jerk and again you are pretty much locked in. You have spent all your hockey life in situations where you can move from a bad situation without penalty and now you are pretty much locked in…especially once you are past your sophomore year.
I played college hockey and my advice to all is if you are smart / disciplined enough to combine high school and CHL hockey I would forget the NCAA and play in the CHL… great buildings in front of large crowds while getting one year of Canadian university paid for each year of junior hockey. At least if it is not working out with the Ottawa 67’s you can get a trade to the London Knights unlike Wisconsin where the coach can sell you a bill of goods to get your name on a letter of intent, then jerk you around to the point where you have to tranfer and essentially waist 2 years of hockey.
