Berenson Signs Extension

Michigan head coach Red Berenson signed a one year contract extension with Michigan today to coach for the 2009-2010 season. After that, Berenson would have the option to renew his contract in one-year increments until he is ready to retire.

Berenson turned 69 in December, and for a few years now, has stopped guaranteeing recruits that he would be there for their entire Michigan career.  When he does leave, however, it should be a fairly seamless transition, with either of his assistant coaches, Mel Pearon or Bill Powers taking over. The biggest concern would be potentially losing the assistant that isn't named head coach.

For now, neither Berenson nor his Michigan team show any signs of slowing down. The Wolverines are near-guaranteed to make their record 19th consecutive NCAA appearance this season. That streak is made all the more impressive by the fact that the second longest streak(Minnesota at 8) and third longest streak(Boston College, tied with North Dakota at 6) are looking likely to end this season.
