The CCHA has issued a one-game suspension to Northern Michigan's Ray Kaunisto for a blindside hit to the head area in a game against Lake Superior last Friday.

Brad Cooper misses 6-8 weeks of his senior year with a broken jaw, and Kaunisto only gets 1 game? doesn’t seem very equitable. hopefully Brad really likes milkshakes…..

Seems like the WCHA is on the CCHA mind set, you will not deter anyone with a one game suspension.

If Kaunisto’s a first-time offender (sorry, I don’t follow the CCHA closely enough to know), then there really isn’t much more that should be done. You can’t base suspensions on the length of time missed due to injury.

Of course, if Kaunisto is a repeat offender, shame on the CCHA.

BTW, I completely disagree with the notion that a one-game suspension won’t deter “anyone.” I’ve been around sports long enough to know that it is certainly a deterrent for many athletes.

Bruce is right. Look how few fights there are in college hockey because of the one-game suspension compared to North Dakota, where you’re allowed to fight and not face a suspension like last weekend.

There hasn’t been a Fighting Sioux player in a fight since Kiap worked over Trevor Bruess in Mankato. Last weekend’s scrum is no where near a fight.

In college, where most teams are only playing 36-40 games a season, I think a one-game suspension is sufficient for a first offense as long as there was no intent to injure. Plus, he has to miss a rivalry game against MTU, and I’m sure he was looking forward to helping his team stomp us down in Marquette tomorrow night.
