Quantifying the USHL's Success
SB Nation's chief hockey numbers guy Gabe Desjardin took a look at the USHL last week and how the league has grown in quality over the past few years.
It has some interesting graphs, including this one...
...which shows the USHL's production of NHLers going from scant to significant. He also points out that on a per-team basis, the USHL now produces as many NHL players as the CHL.

PROOF OF MY POINT!!!
On your “Myths that won’t die” post I commented this…
Actually, I would say that the improved educational packages that the Canadian juniors are offering are a defense against players opting for the NCAA route.
The whole BS theory of players increasingly choosing the CHL over the USHL/NCAA route is just that… BS. Like I said, it’s the CHL that’s playing defense with their “educational package” crap, and they’re losing ground in spite of it.
HA!
And you were talking about the New York Times massaging of statistics! Shame on you for doing the same. The CHL chewed up 47% of last year’s NHL draft. 52% of ALL NHL players are from the CHL. Here are the REAL statistics for the NHL draft http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=31887 . As you can plainly see for yourself, the USHL has averaged a scant 4.56% of the draft over the last 10 years. Yes, the USHL’s percentage of the NHL draft has improved because it averaged a whopping 0% of the NHL draft in ALL previous years combined. To paint a picture that the USHL is on common ground with the CHL, is misinformed and a blatant duplicity.
To Exiled One:
You really need to do some research before you dismiss the trend as a “theory”. It is real. It is fact. For starters, look at the NHL draft history. You will notice that once the CHL started campaigning with aggressive education packages, the percentage of the NHL draft has an upward trend in favor of the CHL. Watch that 47% climb to 60% over the next four years. Look at how many college kids that made the jump to the CHL so far this season. What we are witnessing is in fact a trend. Don’t deny it!
PER TEAM BASIS
How convenient that you totally ignored this phrase.
…on a per-team basis, the USHL now produces as many NHL players as the CHL
In 2007, 60 CHL teams produced 97 draft picks and 12 USHL teams produced 21 draft picks. That’s 1.6 players per each CHL team and 1.75 players per each USHL team.

Chew on this Chadwick...
What baloney! Of course you would take the 2007 draft year because that year was an anomaly! Why didn’t you mention 2008? Because the USHL only had 10 picks (which is closer to the average that the USHL has been producing and therefore more accurate and more recent.) while the OHL alone had 46?Geez… Let me see, that would be 2.6 picks per OHL team, and .83 per USHL team. More importantly, WHERE are the USHL players going in the draft? First round? Top three rounds? No.
If you really want to know the difference between the USHL and the CHL, consider this little tidbit. How many NHL draft picks in total are actually PLAYING in the league currently? Lots of the kids that were picked in the NHL draft from the USHL have moved to college hockey, and are no longer in the league. The NHL draft picks from the CHL continue to play in the CHL, and they have the benefit of moving back and forth between their NHL clubs. Last year, WIndsor had something like 18 kids who were the property of NHL teams. That single number from one single team in the CHL would most likely be greater than that of the entire USHL. There is NO comparison between the CHL and the USHL.

OHL? I said CHL.
Way to pick the strongest of the three leagues… and 2008 was the anomaly. Also, of the 9 NCAA players that were drafted, seven came from the USHL and were still young enough that they could have been playing there previous to the 2008 draft. How many of the OHL players were in their second year of eligibility?

Are you serious?!
Please do your homework. If you want to look at the past TEN years of the draft history or even further, you will find that 2007 was an anomaly for the USHL. I’ll take the O the Dub, the Q whatever. I posted the link to the history of the draft above for everyone to see. There is nothing to hide.
Your comment about the 9 additional draftees that the USHL would have had, but moved onto college hockey warrants a Powning. Yes, those players were still of age, and could have played an additional year in the USHL. However, if you look at it that way, Tavares, Duchesne, Hodgson, Delzotto, Kane ….etc…etc, could also be playing in the CHL…if they hadn’t gone to the NHL!
Ummmm...
I’m talking about that fact that, had those NCAA players stayed in the USHL, they would have been drafted out of the USHL… thus raising the number of USHL drafted players. How would Tavares, Duchesne, Hodgson, Delzotto, and Kane staying in the CHL have affected the number of players drafted out of the CHL?

All based on...
“What if?” We could sit here, and dream up the greatest hypothetical situations in history, however lets’ not live our lives in fantasy land, and stay grounded on what IS and has been.
If all of these NHL draft picks leave the USHL for the NCAA, what then becomes of the quality of USHL play? There are a plethora of NHL draft picks still playing in the CHL, which further serves as evidence of a higher level of play in the CHL.
I have been to 3 ushl games this year and let me tell you there is no comparison to OHL hockey,im being serious now, its like youth hockey, quite frankly i was more entertained at the couple of nahl games iv been to over the ushl games. There is no way on gods green earth that the ushl is on the same level as the ohl,im sorry if talking all of these lies to make you guys feel better than so be it but its just NOT TRUE.
I read this blog to find out what is going on in the NCAA hockey world. I actually like college hockey. I don’t read this blog to hear some fanatical rant about the CHL with fuzzy math and tainted testimonies. I look at the hockey world through the microscope rather than rose colored glasses. I enjoy watching the USHL and NCAA games, but when it comes to producing NHL talent, there is no league that does it better than the CHL. Sorry, but the statistics prove it. Yes, the USHL has improved, but it has a looong way to go before anyone can begin to compare it to the CHL. College hockey is good hockey, but it is not equivalent to the talent level of the CHL. That is the reality of it all.
.
Maybe no single league does it better when it comes to drafting, but the numbers do show the NCAA and the USHL are getting more and more players into the NHL than they have before. Also, as someone who has also watched a lot of CHL and NCAA and now USHL games, yes the CHL may be more top talented than the USHL and maybe the NCAA but I think the NCAA is deeper lines 1-4 and pairings 1-3 than most CHL teams.
I’d love to see an 8 team tourney between the 4 memorial cup teams and the 4 frozen four teams and I’d be willing to bet big time on an NCAA team winning that tourney most years.

Canadiens….go find your own damn web site to bitch and complain about your hockey. Just think if the USA actually cared about hockey….I mean come on it is like the fourth or fifth most popular sport in the US. If we cared like you monkeys do up there, we really would be kicking your ass in all aspects. So give it a rest about this subject. It is ok to be jealous!
