Wiercioch Out for Team Canada

Canada decided not to clear Patrick Wiercioch to try out for the World Juniors because of his knee injury that he's been playing with in recent weeks. Denver head coach George Gwozdecky wasn't pleased with the decision, and you can't blame him. It's a pretty bush league move by Hockey Canada to have Wiercioch fly up to Canada and have him miss a pretty critical game against Minnesota-Duluth, only to cut him without ever letting him step on the ice.

Meanwhile, for the Americans, tryout attendee Luke Walker returned to the ice, after getting 50 stitches and a plate in his face after getting hit with a puck. He'll still skate at the tryout camp in Grand Forks, but Walker was a longshot to make the team in the first place, and if he's hampered by serious pain that could dimish his ability to play a physical role, it could effectively kill his chances.

Realistically

I am not sure what Hockey Canada was suppose to do. If he failed the physical to participate at the camp they really can’t let him play because if he gets hurt, then the law suits would be flying. Ottawa’s doctors say he should be off for at least 2 weeks so why would Denver play him? Is that responsible? He was a bubble player at best for Team Canada so they couldn’t let him coast onto the team. Unfortunate but the safety of the player is the most important thing.

Hank

It sounds like Hockey Canada was given the same medical reports Denver had. And it doesn’t sound like anyone is disputing the nature of his injury.

With that in mind, HC should have either told him not to show up at all, in which case he could have played against UMD on Saturday, or they should have let him skate.

Confirmed

HC was told he was clear to play by Denver. Upon arrival team doctors with HC said the injury was more serious and would prevent Patrick from participating immediately. The state of Patrick’s injury was reconfirmed by Ottawa Senator’s team doctors. Since Patrick could not skate for up to 2 weeks, he was sent home. The doctor’s report from Denver does not matter. It was HC’s doctors that said he was a “no-go”. The fact that an NHL team’s doctors also agreed with that finding should have some questioning, did the Denver’s doctor’s correctly diagnose the injury in the first place?

Sprained MCL

According to media reports he has a sprained MCL. There’s nothing to misdiagnose.

Everyone admits he wasn’t 100%, but he wanted to give it a shot and make Team Canada. Fact of the matter, if Wiercioch was Sidney Crosby, Team Canada or Ottawa Senators doctors would have cleared him to play.

Who knows, maybe they decided that they would rather have Tyler Cuma than Wiercioch and this was a handy excuse. Either way, big loss for Team Canada, because Wiercioch is a great player.
