Cheverie Leaves Game Injured

Denver escaped with a 4-3 home victory tonight over Minnesota State, but may have lost something more important.

Goaltender Marc Cheverie had to leave the game early in the third period, with what sounded like a pretty nasty injury. It sounds like MSU's Justin Jokinen was tripped by Denver's Patrick Wiercioch--Wiercioch received a 2-minute slashing penalty on the play--and Jokinen slid skates first into Cheverie and caught Cheverie's leg with his skate.

The cut was pretty deep and apparently caused a lot of blood. The good news for Denver is that it sounds like the injury won't have any long-term effects for Cheverie, but he'll probably need quite a few stitches and some time to heal up.

Cheverie has been one of college hockey's top players this year. Earlier in the game, he broke Denver's record for consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.

Update: Here is a video of the play.
